Description

The most ambitious commission for Jaze Cinema was the song animation for the song 'Never Be Alone'. A week prior before the ignition of this animation, an animation came across me in which the animator in question used an unique method to mimic the style of a comic artbook, using smart technique's to give it life in a stylized art sequence. I adored this visual and wished to replicate it, give it my own spin and create something unique myself out of the style the other animator used.

Instead of an animation such as above, with character seen as they are, I wanted to stylize the character in my own right and use it as the styleframe for the entire animation. Furthermore, I wanted to spend most of the production time in After Effects, using the 3D camera over set images to showcase the comic book. I used comic book reference as the general structure of each page. From there on, I created fitting frames for each of the lyrics.

As the animation progresses, I wanted it to be become clear that the characters within this hypothetical comic book are actually alive and reacting to the reader/viewer. Initially, all frames are still and unmoving, but as it progresses, the characters begin moving and talking. This eventually culminates in them moving as if lifelike.

Beyond the comic book, I wanted to tell a short story about how this all came to be in the first place. In the mainline game of this franchise, a murderer kills children and stuffs their bodies inside the chassis of robotic characters, allowing for their possession. In my rendition, this murderer(a comic book writer) kills a child, but instead of robotic characters, the child possesses the killer's comic-book instead. This leads to all kinds of bad after sale, as the killer decides to burn the haunted comic book after it is sold. This is seen in the final scene, when the book burns away, so do the characters react to the heat which is in turn the child.
